PRAYER AS pETITION TO GOD

Teach us to pray: 

Prayer as Petition 

 

3 ‘Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.’

Jeremiah 33:3  

The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.17 Elijah was a human being, even as we are. He prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the land for three and a half years.18 Again he prayed, and the heavens gave rain, and the earth produced its crops. 

James 5:16b -18 

None can believe how powerful prayer is, and what it is able to effect, but those who have learned it by experience. It is a great matter when in extreme need to take hold on prayer.

One day Jesus was praying in a certain place. When he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray.” 

Luke 11:1  

Our Father in heaven, 
hallowed be your name, 
10 your kingdom come, 
your will be done, 
    on earth as it is in heaven. 
11 Give us today our daily bread. 
12 And forgive us our debts, 
    as we also have forgiven our debtors. 
13 And lead us not into temptation,  
    but deliver us from the evil one.

Your Kingdom Come 

Petitioning for God’s Power: 

We are asking God for His power to work in our lives and the world around us.  

 

As you go, proclaim this message: ‘The kingdom of heaven has come near.’ 8 Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those who have leprosy, drive out demons. Freely you have received; freely give. 

Matthew 10:7-8  

 

But the church prayed to God without ceasing for him. 

Acts 12:5b  (Modern English Version) 

 

Your will be done 

 

Petitioning for God’s Purposes: 

Let’s humbly ask that God’s will be done in our lives and be open to respond to His leading.  

 

Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart. 

Psalm 37:4 

 

Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, 21 to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.

Ephesians 3:20 

  

Give us this day, our daily bread.   

  

We are petitioning God for his provision: 

 Let us bring our needs unashamedly to the Lord who does care and can provide.   

 

Your kingdom Come: We are petitioning God for His power.  

Your will be done: We are petitioning God for his purposes in our lives to be done.    

Give us today our daily bread: We are petitioning God for his provision.
