Overcoming the snare of performance

I John 5:4-5
4 for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith.5 Who is it that overcomes the world? Only the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God.

I must meet certain standards to feel good about myself.

- Robert McGee

Philippians 3:4-6
…If someone else thinks they have reasons to put confidence in the flesh, I have more: 5 circumcised on the eighth day, of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews; in regard to the law, a Pharisee; 6 as for zeal, persecuting the church; as for righteousness based on the law, faultless.

Philippians 3:7-8
7 But whatever were gains to me I now consider loss for the sake of Christ. 8 What is more, I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things.

  • The Performance Snare says whatever you do will never be enough, but the Cross reminds us that Jesus is perfectly enough.

Philippians 3:8- 9
What is more, I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them garbage, that I may gain Christ 9 and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in  Christ—the righteousness that comes from God on the basis of faith

2 Corinthians 5:21
God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

  • In Christ, you are more deeply loved and accepted than you could ever imagine.

  • Through Christ, you can receive full forgiveness of your sins.

  • In Christ, you are no longer under the guilt and weight of condemnation.

  • In Christ, you can discover true freedom from the snare of performance today.
