About Our Church
December 9, 2018
A message from Glenn Youngkin, HTC Vestry’s senior church warden
Among the Vestry’s responsibilities, we believe that our most important role is the oversight of the well-being of HTC’s staff and in particular, our leaders. Further, whether people are called to rest every seven days or as the Lord told Moses to let the land rest every seven years, we acknowledge that scripture resonates with the spirit of sabbatical (or “sabbath”). It therefore seems only fitting that we fully honor God’s teachings and ensure that those leading us in God’s ways are given the time and space to experience rest, renewal and grace.
As such, the HTC Vestry has encouraged our Co-Pastor, Jamie Haith, to take a sabbatical during the beginning of 2019, from early January through mid-April. Just like we invest in our building or in a new ministry, we are investing in our leadership, and Jamie has plans to deepen his relationship with the Father and honor the meaning of the Sabbath.
During this time, Co-Pastor, Andy Haith, will continue her leadership role at HTC (although we will ask her to spend some dedicated time with Jamie during his sabbatical).
In addition, we will welcome Rev. Derek Rust to the church family as Interim Senior Teaching Pastor. Not only do Derek and the Haiths share a history at London’s Holy Trinity Brompton (HTB) but Derek, his wife, Cathy, and their four wonderful children were at the very heart of HTC’s inception some eight years ago. It’s amazing to have him “home” and we are grateful for his willingness, and the flexibility of his home church in Colorado, to help at this time.
Lastly, as we anticipate Christmas and its many promises, and look to a new year, we are so deeply grateful to God that HTC has matured to a point where we can do this. I want to personally thank the HTC team as they will all take on a little more.
What an exciting time for our church family! On behalf of the Vestry, we thank you for your unwavering support and wish you and yours a blessed Christmas.
We believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.
We believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit
and born of the Virgin Mary.
He suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried;
he descended to hell.
The third day he rose again from the dead.
He ascended to heaven
and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty.
From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.
We believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic* church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.
*that is, the true Christian church of all times and all places
Everything at HTC is about
Loving God and others with all our hearts
HTC is a place where people of all backgrounds and beliefs can gather to discuss Jesus and explore life. As a local church, we feel honored to have an opportunity to play our part in what God is doing in and through all the churches in the McLean and Greater DC area.
The Alpha Course is at the core of our church, keeping the gospel central to all that we do. Alpha has now helped 23 million people worldwide to encounter Christ.
HTC has its origins in the Church of England in the UK. It is inspired by and has strong connections to Holy Trinity Brompton. As such, we are a church that delights in working with all people, of any denomination or none, and has a vision to play its part in the re-evangelization of the nations and the transformation of society. HTB is the home of the now globally renowned Alpha Course.
Lead Pastors Jamie and Andy Haith previously served the Church of England at Holy Trinity Brompton in London for 20 years. While working in partnership with Alpha USA, they developed a heart for America, and eventually came over to lead HTC.
Jamie was on the staff at Holy Trinity Brompton (HTB) in London, England for 20 years.
He graduated from Exeter University and spent ten years as a music minister and assistant pastor at HTB. Jamie went on to study Theology at Ridley Hall in Cambridge.
He was ordained in the Church of England in 2004, returning to HTB as “Alpha Chaplain” and has traveled widely, helping to develop the Alpha Course worldwide.
Andy was also on staff for many years at HTB after graduating from Cambridge University.
She was involved in Alpha and co-leading both the College and Women’s Ministries. She also trained and worked as a Physical therapist.
Jamie and Andy now live here in McLean, Virginia with their four young children (Abby, Thea, Lily, and Tommy) and lead HTC together.
HTC maintains strong links with the episcopacy through HTB and the Bishop of Kensington, personal Pastor to Jamie and Andy.
